Own or rent AI: an honest comparison

Neither always wins. For a 10-person office, renting costs $1,680 to $3,600 a year and owning starts at $6,199 up front, so renting can cost less; ownership buys control of your files, export and a clean exit.

Renting may cost less, and for years

A 10-person ChatGPT Business plan billed annually is $2,400 a year. The box and setup together are $6,199 before extras. That gap takes years to close, and only if you keep using the box.

Option, 10 peopleOne yearThree years
Google Workspace Business Standard$1,680$5,040
ChatGPT Business, billed annually$2,400$7,200
Own: DGX Spark plus the one-week install$6,199$6,199 plus running costs

On these numbers Google Business Standard stays cheaper than the owned box through year three. Owning passes ChatGPT Business billed annually only after about 2.6 years, and only if the local model does the job.

When renting is the better choice

  • You only want a chat window for a few people.
  • You need it working today, not in a week.
  • You want the vendor to fix problems, not one operator.
  • Your files already live in one place you trust.

When owning is the better choice

  • Your files are scattered across email, drives, phones and apps, and you want them under your control.
  • You want a clean exit: if you leave, you keep the hardware, files and memory.
  • You accept a server to keep running, and a first year that costs more.

Ownership buys control, export and exit. It does not buy a cheaper year one.

Our view: rent if you only want a chat window. Own if your files are scattered and you want them under your control.

Questions

Is owning an AI server cheaper than paying for AI seats?

Not in year one. For 10 people, ChatGPT Business billed annually is $2,400 a year, and a DGX Spark plus the one-week install is $6,199 before extras (prices as of 2026-09-29). Owning passes that plan after about 2.6 years, and only if the local model does the job.

What does owning buy that renting does not?

Control of your files on your own hardware, export, and a clean exit: if you leave, you keep the hardware, files and memory.

When should a small business rent AI instead?

When it only wants a chat window, needs it working in minutes, or wants the vendor to fix problems. Renting can cost less.
